Are Moldy Foods Harmful? The Facts That Threaten Your Health

Mold is a problem we frequently encounter in daily life but often take lightly. Mold that forms on foods like bread, cheese, and nuts can be much more dangerous than it appears. But why?

What is Mold and Why is it Dangerous?

Mold consists of microscopic fungi that multiply in humid environments. It appears as green, blue, black, or white patches and does not stay only on the surface; it spreads deep into the food. Some types of mold produce mycotoxins, such as aflatoxin. These toxins can:
  1. Negatively affect liver health
  2. Increase cancer risk
  3. Weaken the immune system
  4. Lead to chronic poisoning

Is Cutting Off the Moldy Part Enough?

No. Mold is not limited to the visible part. It spreads through its threads throughout the entire food item. Therefore, simply cutting off the moldy part will not protect you.

Highest Risk Foods

  • Bread
  • Tomato paste/Puree
  • Nuts (especially peanuts)
  • Cheese (excluding specially produced types)

Ways to Protect Against Moldy Foods

  1. Discard moldy products immediately
  2. Do not consume expired foods
  3. Store opened foods sealed in the refrigerator
  4. Prefer cool and dry environments
Prioritize your health: Cutting off the moldy part is not safe. Your health is more valuable than anything.
